Le Tour de Fat is Back - August Fun!!

Grab your bike and slip into your alter-ego because New Belgium's philanthropic cycling circus Tour de Fat is coming back to Seattle! Costumes and decorated bikes reign supreme as the participants come for a casual ride, good music, good food and lots of great and varied entertainment, then stay, of course, for the beer (more to follow in another mailing to announce entertainment). Amid the hoopla and fun, Tour de Fat also raises money for the Bicycle Alliance and Bike Works. Admission to the Tour de Fat is free. Tell your friends, mark your calendar, and design your costume (optional… can come as you like!).

WHEN & WHERE IT'S HAPPENING…

When: Saturday, August 2, 2008
Time: 10:00 am - 7:00 pm (gather 10:15 am for 11:00 am bike parade; beer garden opens at 12:00 noon)
Where: Gas Works Park on north Lake Union - 2101 N Northlake Way, Seattle, WA 98103 (next to Burke-Gilman Trail between Meridian Ave N and Densmore Ave N in Wallingford, just east of Fremont)

As part of Tour de Fat's Car-for-Bike Trade program, one volunteer will commit to live car-free for one year. The dedicated individual will sign over their car title and receive a hand-built New Belgium commuter bike in exchange. The selected candidate will chronicle the trials and triumphs along their car-free journey. The volunteer is chosen after submitting a video or essay describing their desire to live car-free. For more information, log onto www.followyourfolly.com. See the 2008 car-for-bike trade in Chicago and for last year's swap in Seattle go to www.followyourfolly.com and then click on videos.

Transforming Communities - PRO WALK/PRO BIKE 08: 2-5 September 2008 Seattle

Hundreds of people dedicated to achieving more active walkable and bikable communities are coming to Seattle the week after Labor Day to see and hear about the great progress the Puget Sound region has made creating healthier active communities.

Join bicycle, pedestrian, active living and climate change advocates, elected and appointed officials, bike/ped specialists, transportation experts, land-use planners, safe routes to school coordinators, public health practitioners, and many more who want to make our cities and communities more walkable and bicycle-friendly places. The 15th biennial Pro Walk/Pro Bike Conference is coming to the Pacific Northwest September 2-5, 2008.

The Westin Seattle Hotel will be the headquarters for the event, but there will be ample opportunities to get out and see first-hand examples of great facilities and programs that are making Seattle and the Puget Sound a model city and region for the role of bicycling and walking in 21st century communities.

To learn more about this dynamic and comprehensive conference, visit the National Center for Biking and Walking website. Conference registration is on-line now and you can save $50-100 if you register by August 1st, so don't miss out!
